Allister Deacon’s Coffee Haus exceeded the expectations of its two owners by taking Wausau by storm in its first
year. Rising to the top of a very crowded field, this coffee shop took top honors in its category in the Get with the Program ’07 readers’ poll. A chic upscale environment of artful décor, chandeliers and richly upholstered sofas gives this place a personality all its own. The espresso is hand-pulled, not automated, and served in handsome ceramic mugs. Co-owner Ken Lassa bakes many of the enticing desserts lining the counter. The lunch menu has soup, salad, sandwiches and wraps, while the wine boutique offers hard-to-find international and domestic labels by the glass or bottle. Ken gave up a career in healthcare to team with Jim Wanta to open Allister Deacon’s, named after a character on a PBS comedy show who can do no wrong. Ken and Jim planned the business carefully, but trusted intuition rather than calculation when it came to some things, such as choosing a location. Ignoring advice to open the shop in Weston, they opted for downtown Wausau instead. The owners have been pleasantly surprised by the stream of customers that have flowed through the door since the start.
