Black History Museum and Cultural Center

By the end of the Civil War, the Richmond area known as Jackson Ward had so many African American business and property owners, it was locally known as Little Africa. Called the birthplace of Black capitalism thanks to five Black-owned banks that started between 1888 and 1930, this city within a city was home to 93 percent of Richmond’s black population by 1920. The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia was created to showcase the works and histories of regional African Americans. Carroll W. Anderson Sr. founded the center in 1981. Museum-owned collections are exhibited in a mansion that was built in 1832. These displays teach visitors about the legacy of Jackson Ward’s banks, boutiques and the popular 2nd Street area known as The Deuce. More than 100 artifacts represent six countries and 13 ethnic groups. The museum also displays historical papers, photography, journals of Black newspapers and 20th century art. In addition, the museum presents four to six changing exhibitions each year as well as hosting a variety of educational programs. The center provides outreach through loan programs, visitation and community activities. The Black History Museum and Cultural Center is a must-see cultural experience that commemorates the lives and accomplishments of Blacks in Virginia.
