Something Different
Exceptional and hearty food can be more difficult to find than you might think. Something
Different is a specialty food, wine and cheese shop that does the job particularly well, thanks
to Owner Dan Gill’s vision and knowledge. Not only is the food good, the casual atmosphere
and attentive staff makes visitors feel welcomed and comfortable. Deli sandwiches and seasonal
delicacies, such as soft crabs and local oysters are prepared to order while customers watch and
interact. A local farmer and food historian, Dan purchased a 1920s country store in 1999 with
the purpose of running it as a convenience store. He soon found that he needed to carve out a
niche to set his business apart, and began cultivating a following for his traditional barbecue,
smoked meats, homemade soups and deli sandwiches. Dan then needed chewy bread that held
up to his substantial, juicy sandwiches, so he resurrected the ancient technique of substituting
whey for water in the dough. Unusual in many respects, Something Different features freshly
roasted coffees from around the world and Virginia peanuts. Holding a masters degree in
poultry science, Dan has the intellect to know how to touch the taste buds. His unique creation
of smoked turkey and country ham salad, termed THE Virginia Sandwich, has even made
it into Becky Mercuri’s American Sandwich Book: Great Eats from All 50 States. His focus on the
category he calls specialty heritage foods has allowed him to build his business by creating a new
take on an old food genre. Take the short trip from Urbanna to what locals somewhat jovially
refer to as downtown Pinetree, and experience Something Different.
